Imagine you are about to go down a water-slide. You have never been down this slide before. You are nervous. You have climbed many flights of stairs to get here. You are trying to catch your breath. You are sitting at the top. The lifeguard has cleared you to go down.
There are many unknowns about this slide. When will it twist? Are there going to be sharp turns? When will you go through a tunnel? When will you get to see the light again after entering a tunnel? Will there be any sudden drops? How fast will it be?
After all your questions, you realize something. You realize that regardless of all these variables, the water will take you to the end of the slide. You trust this rushing stream to carry you through. The water will not leave you stranded in a tunnel or stuck along the way.
This is how I see times of change in our lives; especially times like graduation. The truth is, even after graduating from high school, we have more transitions to go through. We may graduate from post-secondary school, change jobs, leave home, move, enter full time missions, get married, or have children…all these things come with tons of unknowns.
Grade 12’s, I know it’s not June yet, but I know you are preparing for graduation already. Walking up the stairs represents your years of hard work leading up to grad. The water-slide represents life after grad. (And yes, there is in fact life after grad.) Many of you are unsure of which path to take. “Where will I work, go to school or live?” I know it’s frustrating to think that there may not be one correct answer to these questions. You just have to go.
Just please, know this….
God is like the water on the water-slide. He is constant. He is with you. He will keep you going. You can trust Him.
God will be there to guide you in the dark, when you don’t know where to go. He may bring you to places you didn’t expect to go. He will support you when you are afraid. He will be your safe landing when you hit the drops in life.
It is hard to not know what will come next. But it is good to know that the God, who helped you up those “stairs”, is the same God who will help you down the “slide”. God, who took care of you until now, will take care of you always. He is consistent throughout the inconsistencies in our lives.
Isaiah 42:16 “I will lead the blind by a way they do not know,
In paths they do not know I will guide them.
I will make darkness into light before them
and rugged places into plains.
These are the things I will do,
And I will not leave them undone.”
Deuteronomy 31:8, “The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
